Shuffle Shop

From left to right: Shop, Paul, Sean, Rowan

Shuffle Shop,  bringing quality live, good-time, pumping, stomping, rocking Blues to Nelson. You won’t find us (or anyone else at our gigs), crying in our drinks! We’re all about having a good time. So come along, and hear Nelson’s premier blues dance band and party band.

Formed in 2008, the current line up is Shop on lead guitar, rhythm guitar, slide guitar and vocals, Rowan Strickland on bass and backing vocals, Paul Denny on Harmonicas, and our famous expatriate from the UK, Sean Barker on Drums.

Rowan and Paul are avid Golfers, getting out for a game at any opportunity as well as comparing notes nearly every time the band is together. Rowan is also a keen recreational fisherman. Meanwhile, Shop is more interested in Ducatis and his dog Starr. There will be a page dedicated to the bands other interests in the near future.

The emphasis and drive behind our existence is integrity within the Blues genre with a few related songs thrown in including Jimi Hendrix, Cream,  and The Rolling Stones covers. We’ve played venues from pubs to wine bars to weddings and motorcycle club functions as well as birthday parties ranging from 30th to 60th. We have our own gear in varying sizes so we are able to comfortably conform to the volume requirements of various age groups.

Some original material is included with songs…
Nightbird, written in 1989 and still one of the most credible originals we’ve heard. Nightbird is by no means art, simply a song with a beat and hooks and good phrasing that is fun to play and audiences react well to it.

Devil in a Black Dress, need any more be said on the subject?
Ten Thirty Blues, written for a devil in a black dress, Shop loves playing this song and plays it at any given opportunity. Ten Thirty Blues can be 3 minutes or twenty minutes long (depending on how close to 10:30 it is).
Mobile Man, perhaps a way to avoid devils in black dresses.
Road Trip, a way to get to, or away from, devils in black dresses.
Going to Samoa, written after an earthquake and tsunami devastated this neighboring island nation
Let it Go, Shuffle Shop Boogie, and Shuffle Shop Music. We continue to add new original material.
Whiskey, Wine, and Gin – Well, I think maybe that title needs no explanation.

Shuffle Shop are all members of the Nelson Jazz Club. We support Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival.

Playhouse gig March 2009

Where would we be without Ibanez, Washburn, and Fender guitars, Hartke, Peavey, Samson, Peavey, and Marshall amplifiers, Yamaha and Peavey speakers, Soundcraft Mixers, Tama drums, Honer harmonicas, Sure, AKG, and Peavey microphones, EMG and Seymour Duncan pickups, Martin, Dean Markley, GHS, SIT, and D’Adario guitar strings. Thanks to the wizards that develop and put all this stuff together, thousands of musicians all over the globe are out there living the Blues. Having said that, thanks also to Neville Clawton, Ivan Outram, Stephan Gilberg, and the other local blokes that keep it all working.

Note: While we’d like to claim to be the best band, or even the best blues band around, we feel we cannot do that. There are so many excellent performers in New Zealand. There’s constantly new material being created by some extremely talented individuals and unique and exciting songs being written, performed, and recorded regularly. Having said that, we believe in the products we offer, we are seasoned musicians, each with a long portfolio of musical achievements over a period spanning thirty years. We get excited about every performance and we treat performance as a show. We turn up with a professional attitude and professional equipment and we give it all we’ve got.
